Rutgers
University has been Approved!

Rutgers University has been Approved! Rutgers University
is now fully approved by the Addictions Professionals Certification
Board, Inc. as a provider of substance abuse related coursework.
" This means all Rutgers University schools and
campuses that offer matriculated (part of a
degree) coursework are now covered! All approved
degree/matriculated courses taught through the university will also
receive college credit!
This announcement is the culmination of two years of work that
began when Steve Liga (an LCADC, CPS, and CCS) began teaching
addiction policy courses as part of Rutgers University's Bloustein
School of Planning and Public Policy. Drawing from his years
as a CADC/CPS course instructor, he crafted two upper level, three
credit courses that met the objectives of many of the standard six
hour initial certification courses. Recognizing the potential
that several of his students might choose to pursue a career in
addiction services (and eventually need to be licensed or
certified), he began serving as a liaison between the University
and the Certification Board. Today, students who take his
courses not only earn credits toward their college degrees, they
also are simultaneously earning credit toward credentialing as
addiction professional.
Going forward, all faculty who teach addiction-related
coursework at Rutgers can submit their courses for approval towards
certification and licensure. This opens the door to teachers
from throughout the university who teach in the fields of medicine,
psychology, counseling, policy, social work, etc. to have their
addiction and prevention related courses approved. From the University's
perspective, their courses are now more valuable to students, as
they serve a dual purpose. From "the field's"
perspective, this is valuable because many students who would have
previously not considered addiction studies as an option may now
consider a career in addiction services.
The Certification Board is pleased to welcome Rutgers University to
its family of approved university and college providers, which
include the College of New Jersey, Fairleigh Dickenson University,
Monmouth University, Montclair State University, New Jersey City
University, Ramapo College, Rowan University and
UMDNJ; Atlantic Cape, Bergen, Brookdale,
Burlington, Camden, Essex, Ocean, and Passaic Community
Colleges.
Please note that CEU credits offered in a non-degree continuing
education format may also be approved once the instructors submit
coursework for approval.

New CPS Required
Coursework
The
Certification Board passed a motion on September 12th to accept the
recommendations of the Board's Prevention Advisory Committee.
The CPS Advisory Committee (B. Sprechman, S. Liga, L. Daly, P.
Clarke, N. Salt, B. Adolphe, and D. Adelman) has been meeting
monthly for the past year and has completed a revised CPS Training
Manual that the Board approved at our June meeting. These include:
·
The number of training hours drops to 120 clock hours (from 180
hours).
·
10 courses were eliminated as they were not reflected in the new
IC&RC JTA.
·
Classes were developed, edited, or re-written to comply with the
new JTA.
·
Click here for a list of classes
These new training standards meet the knowledges and
skills identified in the new CPS Job Task Analysis and tested for
on the IC&RC Prevention Written Exam. Please note that the
Board will accept, when possible, completed courses from the
previous training manual. CPS Training Providers are wrapping up
training forms and old manuals and instituting the new training
during this quarter. The new lineup of courses will be in operation
by the start of 2009.
Students are invited to send in their amplifications for review to
determine what courses they are still required to complete. The CPS application is
available for dowload on our website.
The Board also approved a CPS motion to:
1. Drop the recertification hours to
36 from 50. This will more accurately reflect the 120 hours
required for initial certification.
2. Add 4 Specialty recertifications
options of a minimum of 24 hours each in:
a. "Arts in
Prevention"
b. Juvenile
Justice Prevention
c. Violence
Prevention
d. Disabilities
Prevention
The specific specialty options will be developed during this
quarter and be presented to the Board in December.

There is now
a pathway for Recovery Mentor Associates (RMA) to obtain the
Chemical Dependency Associate (CDA).
The Board, in response to many requests from the RMA's, has
designed a way to keep their credentials meaningful in the face of
government funding cutbacks and to expand the RMA's employability
in the addiction field.
Active RMA's can upgrade to the 72 hour CDA by:
· Using the 48
hours of training acquired for your initial RMA. Send in your
certificate with CDA application.
· PLUS The actual
18 recertification hours required for your first RMA cycle.
· PLUS any 6
additional approved CADC hours.
You will be required to take the following 6 hour courses for your
next recertification period as a CDA.
o C101 Initial Interviewing
o C201 Introduction to Counseling
o C304 HIV
o C503 Cultural Competency
